Scabbers, terrified and restless, manages to escape from Ron's grasp. Crookshanks, Hermione's cat, immediately pursues the rat. Ron throws off the Invisibility Cloak and runs after them in desperation, with Harry and Hermione close behind, abandoning their cover in the darkened Hogwarts grounds.
