About
TLDR: I think it would be really cool to build this website and have it used as THE reference for the Harry Potter books.
(Maybe they'll need to reference it for the HBO show.. that would be pretty cool.)
What is this half (way more then half) empty website?
This idea stems from two different hobbies of mine.
- I am a developer and enjoy tinkering with projects on the side.
- I am a massive Harry Potter fan. I've been listening to MuggleCast (almost) every week since 2016. Total brag!
Ok, but what's with the mostly empty website?
Well, I did the first chapter.. But I want to go back and work on the Perspectives feature so each Character has a better Timeline with something that's specifically about them instead of just using the Event name.
What the fuck is a "Perspective", "Timeline", or "Event"?
Ok, right, the website is broken down in two different ways.
The first is a breakdown of the text.
What does that mean?
We have three models that go from biggest to smallest that represents a section of the book.
We have Books, that have Chapters, that have Events.
I get Book and Chapter, but what is an Event? Something thats part of the Chapter?
Exactly, an Event is a way to represent different parts of the Chapter.
This means that when you go to a Item's timeline you get more specific details about when that Character, Location....
Wait, what's a Timeline.. and what's an Item? That sounds kind of utilitarian.
That's fair. I want to make things like Characters, Locations, Connections, Magic, Beasts, Things, and Groups more differentiated... but the first step is to connect all of the pieces. Or if someone is just interested in that part they are more then welcome to but we can't really launch until we've broken down all the text.
So what is a Timeline!?
A timeline is a list of all Events that an Item, or for example, a Character has been involved in.
This is why I want to work on the Perspectives feature I mentioned earlier. By default, the Timeline shows the Event name.. but by adding a Perspective it can be tailored in a way that when viewing the Timline it's something from the Item, or Character's, Perspective.
No one understand why we need a Perspective at this point.
Give me some time to come up with some examples.
